Why Lobbying is Good for You and Your Profession A Lobby-agent was a 19th century citizen who met public officials in the lobby of the Willard Hotel in Washington D.C. to let his public servants know how he felt about the issues of the day. The right for citizens to petition their government is guaranteed in the Constitution. "Lobbying" is not a dirty word. Scientists and engineers need effective Washington representation, probably more than almost any other constituency. Without professional Washington representation you are taking a risk - similar to the risk you would run if you invited your dentist to conduct one of your projects. You are risking the time and talent of your staff and may be putting them in the unfamiliar and uncomfortable position of going to Washington to meet with politicians. You are risking that you have an adequate knowledge of the political and appropriations process. Washington representation (a lobbyist) can help you set up a strategy with realistic and achievable goals. Katy Makeig can represent you in Washington. Contact me if you want to learn about lobbying, if you don't need a full-time representative, or if your budget has limits. I can use my experience and skills to promote your cause on the Hill. ![]() Rep. Rush Holt and WSI President Katy Makeig during her Fellowship in 2000-2001 I am a scientist and understand how technology, science and public policy interact. My roots are in the technical community. I spent time learning how the government works, time you might not have yourself. I have credibility with scientists and engineers because I am a practicing scientist. I use my ability to view evidence and draw conclusions to understand all aspects of an issue. This helps me make more convincing arguments. I can elevate an emotional discussion to one that incorporates logic and reason and achieves a better outcome. I understand politics. I have credibility with the government because I have worked there. I have worked on staff, with committees, and on the floors of Congress. I know the rules.
Katy Makeig now offers these public policy services:
![]() After an 18-month stint on Capitol Hill, Katy Makeig, former president and owner, returned to WSI on a full-time basis to provide consulting and public policy services to our clients. She was the 2000-2001 AAAS Con-gressional S&T Policy Fellow, sponsored by the American Geological Institute. During that time, she served in the office of Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12th). Katy worked on energy, environment, transportation, and S&T issues. One conclusion that she has drawn from the experience is that we all are more powerful citizens than we realize, and can influence public policy by becoming active participants in the political system, at every level. Alan Bromley, former presidential science advisor, stated simply, "No science - no surplus." The vanished surplus will not be restored without robust S&T funding. WSI identified opportunities in the physical sciences - a critically under-served and under-represented sector of the S&T community. Political sophistication is a virtue, not a vice. Knowing how Washington works can help your organization achieve your goals. Let Katy Makeig represent your interests Washington and help you succeed.
